7. Buduburam Refugee Camp

Buduburam Refugee Camp, just outside of Accra, Ghana, has roughly 47,000 refugees living on a meager 120 acres of land. There is no running water or waste disposal programs. There is one small medical clinic to service all residents which however, lacks many necessary medicines and supplies. People crown into small mud huts with roofs made of thatched roof or sometimes, rusted aluminum sheets. Many suffer from Malaria and other otherwise preventable diseases. The refugees are totally reliant on the camp administration that is run by the Ghanaian military and supported sparingly by the UNHCR and UNICEF programs. This project seeks to create sustainable community living spaces that are beautiful, robust, and temporary, that can be packed up and reused time and again, at other refugee camps around the world whenever a crisis springs up. We would like to make this concept a showcase concept that proves that people can live temporarily in humane conditions, able to sustain themselves indefinitely, and posting little burden to their hosts.
