6. Cities Alliance Sponsored Urban Development Strategy—Liberia
With the help of ASU Global Studies and Sustainable Urbanist Professor Douglas Webster, ESI is preparing an application for Cities Alliance sponsorship in order to research and develop an Urban Planning Strategy, or City Development Strategy (CDS) for the cities in Liberia as well as for the cities in Nimba County.
Populations are growing at explosive rates in Africa and unfortunately for sub-Saharan Africa, cities are usually synonymous with slums. As internal migration favors the opportunity the big city promises, the city, and its ability to provide services in education, medical, transportation and infrastructure, food, electricity, and other necessities is being overwhelmed.
Thus, ESI is embarking on the task, along with its government of Liberian (GoLl) partners, to develop strategies for urban growth, and to create a Liberian Cities Alliance, so that cities can share knowledge, assets, and coordinate growth sectors to maximize economic advantage and create opportunity for its citizens.
