Project details

1. Sustainable Village (SV)

The goal of the SV model is to tackle the Millennium Development Goal challenges by creating Local Economic Development (LED). ESI will create LED by designing a system where food is produced at increased yields creating a surplus in the production of a variety of foods (improved agro-techniques, seeds, irrigation, fertilizers, fish farm, and swamp rice). This surplus can then be sold at market, creating revenue and economic growth. The objective is to use this increased community revenue to reinvest into human capital, health, education, infrastructure and other needs of the community, thus helping achieve local MDGs as well as the goals of creating sustainable growth and defeating the poverty trap.

The SV’s focal point is the Sustainable Village Service Center, run by a director, who is also the project manager and coordinates all SV development efforts; helps the community develop solutions on how to manage their growth; collects and tabulates the data on the development parameters; and consults community members on sustainability issues. Other aspects of the SV concentrate on increasing agricultural yields (Green Revolution), water management and clean water availability, developing a community Health Aide program to supplement the Ministry of Health Basic Packages of Health Services system, providing micro-loans so that community members can start micro-businesses, and the development of a Institute of Sustainability to conduct research on sustainability issues as well as provide training and critical skills to community members to prepare them for jobs in a carbohydrate economy.

Additionally, The SV will create opportunities for micro-businesses including the creation of a sustainable development consulting business called the Sustainable Village Service Center (SVSC); alternative energy solutions such as solar and mini hydro as well as biofuel produced from the Jatropha tree; Agriculture green revolution and the agribusiness that will come from increasing agriculture yields from improved seeds, agricultural techniques, and modern fertilizers & Integrated Pest Control techniques; water management, collection and harvesting; IT services; medical services and private clinics; bamboo plantations for construction and building materials as well as furniture, flooring, and many other uses; Medicinal Plant nursery, with the star the Morinda Tree; Just to name a few, but many more micro-business can be started as a result of the SV effort.
